Introduction

Childhood is a time for growth and development of bones, teeth, muscles and blood. Nutrition during this period of the life cycle significantly determines teenage and adult eating patterns and risks for nutritional disease. Children are at a greater risk for deficiency when they have a poor appetite for a long period, eat a limited number of foods, dilute their diet with nutrient-poor foods and/or have food sensitivities or allergies that limit their diet.

Classical food allergies often develop during childhood and are more likely to occur as a result of a family history of allergies and sensitivities. Allergic responses might include respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms, skin reactions, fatigue, lethargy, and behavioral changes.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as well as Autism Spectrum Disorders can be managed through nutritional changes in both children and adults. Many children are sensitive to processed foods with artificial colors and flavorings as well as other food sensitivities.
